Montclair Community Amenities

Montclair translates as “clear mountain” in French and is so named for the town’s location on the First Mountain of the Watchung Mountains, which affords good views of the New York City skyline from many Montclair locations.

There is so much to do in this busy suburb located about 12 miles from Manhattan. The Montclair Art Museum, along with several galleries, represents the thriving local art scene. Several historic movie theatres in Montclair show indie films and other special-run programs. There are also multiple venues for concerts and live shows, including the Montclair Operetta Company, Montclair State University’s Kasser Theater, the Studio Playhouse, and more. Montclair publishes its own local newspaper, the Montclair Times, and broadcasts a university radio station.

There are too many recreational activities to fit into one lifetime in Montclair. It is home to four skating rinks, eighteen tennis courts, and more than a handful of excellent parks and nature preserves. It also has three public swimming pools. Montclair even has its own sports teams, such as the New Jersey Jackals minor league baseball team, the Montclair Rugby Club,  and the New Jersey Pride Lacrosse team.

Many people may recognize areas in Montclair from the TV series The Sopranos, where many scenes were shot and businesses were featured.

Students attending Montclair schools will most likely enroll in Montclair Public Schools, though charter and private options are available as well.
